This year, my sister Krista who works at Urban Promise in Camden, started an Urban Promise Millville. They ran a successful 6-week FREE summer camp, employed 9 local teens and college-aged kids to lead the campers, and served over 720 meals over the camp duration. Their camp was structured to stop "summer slip," which most kids experience during the summer months-- losing some of the learning they achieved in math, reading, and science over the school year. The campers' parents were supportive and grateful for a safe, educational, quality program their children could attend without putting a financial burden on the family.
This fall, UPM is expanding their program to further support children, teens, and families in our city. They are providing a 3-day a week FREE after-school program. The elementary children will receive a snack each day, help with their homework, and time for movement and art. Millville High School seniors will be helping with the children, which gives them an opportunity to have meaningful employment during their school year, gain leadership training, and feel a sense of belonging in the UPM community. It is a program built to reach a child, raise a leader, restore a community.
